But interest in this idea has never been greater than it is today. As this interest has grown, the ways in which we conceptualize autonomy have also become more complex and problematic. In this paper, Dr. Benson will outline how the principles and practice of autonomy in language teaching and learning have developed over the past three decades and, in particular, how changing contexts of application have influenced theory. Emphasizing the malleability of autonomy as a construct, in conclusion, he will discuss some potential futures research and practice in the field.

Dr. Phil Benson is a Professor in the English Department at the Hong Kong Institute of Education. He has published widely on the subject of autonomy, including the book Teaching and researching autonomy in language learning (Pearson, 2001) and a recent State-of-the-Art review in Language Teaching (40:1). His current research interests include language learning stories (he is co-editor with David Nunan of the recent collection, Learners stories: difference and diversity in language learning - Cambridge University Press, 2005), popular culture and language learning, and language teacher education.

Dr. INMACULADA FORTANET GÓMEZ, Universitat Jaume I (Spain):

From ESP to CLIL: Is Teacher Training a Problem?

English for Specific Purposes appeared in US over 50 years ago as an approach to teaching the English language to be used for predetermined situations. Eventually, it evolved to become the teaching of English as a foreign language associated to a profession or a field of study in countries where English is not the official language, and these two branches were known as English for Occupational or Professional Purposes, and English for Academic Purposes. Nowadays, the teaching of English in Europe seems to be going a step forward with Content and Language Integrated Learning. CLIL can be applied to all levels of education and involves teachers of English who deal with a certain discipline, and teachers of a discipline who teach in English. In both cases, teachers need specific training. In this lecture, Dr. Fortanet Gómez deals with the current problems specific training for CLIL teachers may have and how they might be solved.

Dr. Inmaculada Fortanet Gómez is a senior lecturer and researcher at Universitat Jaume I (Castellón, Spain), where she coordinates the Group of Research on Academic and Professional English (GRAPE). Her research interests are related to academic and professional English. She has co-edited several books, such as Genre Studies in English for Academic Purposes or, more recently, Intercultural and International Business Communication: Theory, Research and Teaching (Peter Lang 2006), and Toward a Harmonised European Higher Education: English as the Medium of Teaching and Learning (John Benjamins 2008). She has published chapters in well-known international books, as well as articles in English for Specific Purposes, Discourse Studies and Journal of English for Academic Purposes.

Home
Organization
Reviewers
Speakers
Programme
Papers
Publication
Registration
Dates
Venue
Accommodation

UNIVERSIDAD CATÓLICA SAN ANTONIO | Campus de los Jerónimos 30107 | Guadalupe-Murcia (Spain)
Webmaster: Carlos Periñán
