Objectives

The aim of the degree program “Magister of Mediation and Conflict Management” is to prepare graduates from different professional backgrounds for higher, more qualified tasks in the areas of conflict analysis, conflict management, mediation, the prevention of violence, reconciliation work and peace studies. The course of studies targets professionals who are responsible for the management of conflicts in their professional surroundings (institutions, organizations, companies, administrations), and who work in social, pedagogical, consulting and judicial jobs. It provides them with the opportunity to gain an internationally acknowledged academic degree as well as the knowledge for their professional expertise in the course of an extensive continuing education.

The degree program consists of a basic field of study and an in-depth field of study. The basic field of study offers the basic knowledge of the methodology, which presents the basic tool for every area of application. It also includes an overview of the current state of research in psychology, sociology, communication science, business administration, political science etc., all of which play a role in the methodology of mediation and which form the foundation of the practical work of mediation.

In the in-depth field of study, the students become familiar with the distinctive features of the individual fields of application while learning to apply their methodological knowledge in specific scenarios. Furthermore, there will be a focus on the scientific foundation of mediation as an interdisciplinary as well as a trans-disciplinary method. The master’s thesis is required to be a self-reliant scientific work.

Getting to know the management of sustainable development introduces students to the fundamental problems of sustainable economy and the significance of mediation as a tool for the reconciliation of interests. Taking into account its complexity and cross-linking, the potential for conflict will be thoroughly analyzed and explored. By doing so, cross-linked thinking and acting will be taught and trained. Therefore, the in-depth part of the program is even of interest for trained mediators, since it is not only an additional qualification, but also an in-depth scientific approach to their profession.

The contents will be taught by using a blended learning method; elements of distance learning give students the theoretical background, which will be reflected upon and internalized in a user-oriented way in small group trainings. The degree is completed with a master’s thesis in which the students scientifically discuss and empirically analyze special aspects of mediation.

Graduates will gain extensive competence in dealing with the areas of conflict and tension. They will be able to use the methodological tools of mediation in order to work internationally as mediators and to plan, accompany and manage responsibly the tasks of reconciliation of interests, peace work and conflict management.

The Magister in Mediation and Conflict Management (Mag.) by UCAM is an autonomous university program. The awarded title is a university own degree (título propio) according to Article 34 of the Spanish University Law, Ley Organica 6/2001 in the version 4/2007.
